It feels like we’ve left Morocco but we’re still officially in the south. Tonight we’re in Tarfaya, on the coast north of Laayoune.
The closer we get to the ‘disputed border’ of Western Sahara, the more police checks we encounter, the more sand dunes we see and the straighter the roads become. Too hard to stop for a good photo today but this shows how straight they are! The scenery has actually been outstanding but you’ll have to wait for a proper update for more.
Staying in Sidi Ifni has been a dream come true. Finally a quiet place to relax and plan our route south through ‘Moroccan Sahara’. The only sound we can hear is the waves of the Atlantic.
We had a fun day exploring Marrakech today followed by a fantastic evening sharing stories with Stefan, a London friend who ‘was in town’. Souk Kafe has the BEST cous cous imagineable!
We hadn’t planned to spend time in Marrakech (we can easily come here another time!) but after the torrential rain and wind around the Atlantic Coast we’ve come here for some R&R. And we’ve found it!
We officially have our Mauritanian visas!! £35 down and four days later we can finally head south. Very exciting moment.
Louise’s bike needs new brake pads and luckily a wonderful local man, Rachid befriended us and found a place to sort it out. After stopping for directions a few times and many turns the wrong way down one way streets we’ll be back on the road to Marrakech soon.
We’ve made it to Oued Zem, a medium sized town 150km south of Rabat. We are clearly the only tourists around; there are no restaurants open because of Eid, our bathroom tap has a slight drizzle & the police stopped to ask what we were doing! Having fun and looking forward to collecting our visas in Rabat tomorrow.
We were very happy to have a day of riding with no rain today! The ‘B’ road from Khenifra to Oued Zem was perfect – mountains, rolling hills, few cars and lots of sheep that had clearly survived Eid.
We were very happy to find a small cafe in the square in Meknes open on Eid! Fantastic medina gate and amazing tiled walls.
Travelling through Morocco on Eid means you see some interesting sights. Here is a local cart collecting up the hides that have just been skinned from the sheep….
